Zakat is one of the major religious duties in Islam. Literally, zakah means to “purify”. It refers to the purification of a Muslim’s wealth and soul. Wealth purification denotes the mobilization of assets for the purpose of financial growth and justified distribution.

To pay the Zakat, one must be a Muslim, sane adult, in possession of the nisab (the minimum amount of wealth that one must have before zakat is payable) for one whole year. Zakat must be paid on cash deposits held in bank accounts.
